How to Make Laundry Detergents Effective in Hard water

Hard water is water that has high mineral content. It contains salts of calcium and magnesium in the form of bicarbonates, chlorides, and sulphates. the greater the concentration of these minerals, the harder the water. And this high concertation of these minerals affects the way our clothes look and feel after laundry. Hard water makes the fabric rough as these salts attach to the fibers of the fabric, leaving a residue. Using the right detergent, and in the right way can solve this problem for you.

Here are some tips to making laundry detergents effective in hard water

  • Choose the right type of detergent

The best type of detergent to use while doing laundry with hard water is a liquid detergent. Liquid detergents contain nonionic surfactants, which are resistant to hard water. The ingredients in powdered detergent, get attached to the minerals, rather than cleaning the clothes. Hence building up more residue. Better results are achieved by using liquid detergent.

  • Use a combination of products

Another tip to achieve better results with hard water laundry is by using ½ cup laundry borax to your regular load of detergent. The borax acts as a water softener by producing a soluble calcium complex, hence no residue is left on the clothes.
You can also add a fabric softener after your regular laundry load with liquid soap. The fabric softener gets rid of any built-up residue in the fabric fibers, hence making them soft.

  • Use the right temperature

Using very high temperatures in hard water will damage the fabric, and sometimes it may even leave a rust color residue on the fabric. To avoid this, use medium to lukewarm temperature with liquid detergent and a fabric or water softener.
